Meetup Topics

Welcome to UXSG Open Space.

What discussion would you like to facilitate at our next meetup? Please feel free to add your topic below.

NOTE : Please prefix topic titles with the Meetup #. e.g. Meetup #30 – A great topic to discuss

For those unfamiliar with Open Space, it’s a meeting approach where meeting participants (or in this case, meetup attendees) create the agenda for themselves at the start. At UXSG Open Space:

  • The facilitator begins with a short introduction and explains how the self-organising process works.
  • Attendees who want to present or facilitate a discussion will put up their topics.
  • Everyone votes on the topics they would most like to participate in.
  • Voted topic hosts then run their sessions in separate breakout rooms or corners while taking notes.
  • Topic hosts provide a short summary of their session to end the meetup.

Although documentation of Open Space isn’t required, we invite topic hosts to share their thoughts and notes on our website to continue the conversation and increase the level of knowledge within the community.

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

    • Meetup #30 - Improv for better Insights

Quick workshop on some improv rules that will really help you gain better insights from your customer interviews. The key is to build the psychological safety that allows interviewees to express themselves without fear of judgement. We'll show you three key improv rules ("Yes, and", "Make your partner look good" and, "Find the feeling), play some games and have a chat about how this relates to the world of user research.

      • Meetup #28: Product design: How important is it to know the "ideal state" you're designing towards?

There are problems with your product - it's not easy to use, users have to make too many choices, the info architecture is confusing, etc.

There are many incremental improvements you know you can make, and you have some vague idea of what the product is working towards.

How important is it for UX designers to first take a step back to figure out what that "ideal state" is, before carrying out the incremental improvements? The former will exhaust more time & resources before outputs are produced, but the latter runs the risk of "improving a horse when we should…

                • Bridging design practice and business strategy

In design practice there is much focus on developing specialist or technical skills. At a business level is focus on delivery of strategy. How can the two poles be effectively bridged so all parties and functions are pulling in the same direction?

                    • Aligning UI animation and interaction to your brand identity

When coming up with a brand identity, designers will come up with brand guides with colors, font style and sizes, usage do's and don'ts.

But what's the best way to approach when coming up with animation and interactions to match a brand identity?

                        • Are micro-interactions important?

Micro-interactions are picking up a lot of hype as they are quirky and delight users. However, these interactive animations are difficult to develop and require a lot more effort on the developmental side. Are they worth the hype and investment?

                          • Using technology to enhance experiences in nature

Typically technology takes us away from the natural world into a screen or into data...but what if it could be used to enhance our connection to the natural world? Let's explore tools that allow us to be more in touch with some of the most mysterious places left on earth; the uncharted territories of plants, animals, and micro-organisms.

                                        • Where service design meets interaction design

We all know that UXD is more than interface design. We also know how to research, design, test and optimise services. But what if the experience bridges those two worlds? How do we unite thinking from these disciplines? How do we prototype? Test? Iterate? Release in an agile way?
